Character Paper – update

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

We have had difficulties in getting new stock of the Character High White Wove paper. It transpires that the mill who originally produced the paper closed. The Character paper is now manufactured in another mill. However, they no longer produce the “high White” colour. They only produce the paper in a “Brilliant White”.

Problems writing on a surface?

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Some papers ideally need treating before writing to give a sharper, crisper surface. Pounce gives a tooth to smooth paper helping produce crisper letters.

Pounce is also used to remove the grease from the paper surface, preventing the ink from spreading. It can help prevent ink from spreading on unsized paper or over an erasure, as well as to prepare vellum to take writing ink.
Pounce can be used for a paper that is too absorbent, on which the ink sinks into spreading and bleeding.

Pounce is a finely ground powder prepared from gum Sandarac mixed with pumice or cuttlefish bone.

To use, sprinkle a little Pounce over the surface and gently rub in with a soft cloth. Then, remove the excess with a soft brush. If there is a gritty feeling on the paper or the Pounce collects in the nib, you need to have another go at dusting the paper.

Starting Calligraphy – paper

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Most art shops stock a bewildering range of papers. With such a wide choice, which do you use for calligraphy?

The choice of papers for calligraphers is not as great as it may first seem. This is because calligraphers require a smooth paper with a tooth or edge so that the letters are sharp. In comparison, water colour artists do not need a smooth surfaced paper and therefore have a much wider choice of papers available.

When beginning calligraphy you are going to use a lot of paper, so you want to select the cheapest that is suitable to use.
Some photocopier papers are suitable, but many of them will make the ink bleed in to the paper. Also, the most readily available size of photocopier paper is A4. A4 paper is frequently too small for calligraphy writing. A3 paper size is recommended.
Layout paper is ideal for practising. It is slightly transparent enabling you to see the paper underneath. This means you could have a guideline sheet underneath to save the hassle of ruling-up every practise sheet. You could draw your guidelines in a fine black pen. You can see the lines more easily underneath the paper and can save you time. Layout paper is also a good writing surface giving crisp letters. As always, do experiment as the paper quality varies. We offer two types of layout paper.
