So far I have shown you screenshots of the homepage, product page and the page for the artist’s products. The next couple of images will show how a product is added.
Firstly, you enter the product name and description. Next you will select a product category. These categories are for describing the type of work rather than the content or theme. This will allow people to search for example, all pieces of work that are poetry.

The following screenshot is showing you the other attributes of each product. Firstly, the sale price of the item in United Kingdom Pounds – GBP. Next is the quantity or stock level of the piece. In most cases this will be one because the piece is unique. However, you can sell limited edition prints for example or perhaps greetings card in which case you may want to tick unlimited stock box.
Within the Product Shipping Details, you enter the Service you are using i.e. Royal Mail, the Destination and finally the price. You enter this information for each country you are willing to ship your work to. It may just be the UK or could be many countries. You can add as many or few destinations as you wish.
Finally you upload an image of the product. The image is selected on your PC by using the browse button and during the upload is resized for the web.

In my last post I displayed a couple of images showing the gallery homepage and an example of a product/picture for sale. Notice that when I’m talking about the items in the gallery I sometimes say pictures and other times products. This is because you can sell either or both! As well as original pieces of work you can sell limited edition prints, greetings cards, handmade books etc.

Below is the first behind the scenes screenshot, which is showing a summary of the artists products.

There are three categories:

Products On Sale
These are the products that are currently active and are being displayed on the website. As you enter the details of a new product you can decide if they are to initially be on sale or not on sale. The maximum number of products you are allowed to have for sale at any given time will depend upon your subscription level.

Products Not On Sale
These are the products whose details have been entered, but are not active, do not appear on the website and are currently not for sale. (Within reason) this number is unlimited. So you can have products ready to sell and at a click (or two) they can become active and for sale.
This means you can be ready to sell different pieces of work at certain times of the year. For example, you could have pieces of work based around Spring or Autumn ready. As we approach these times of the year you can activate these products and display them for sale.

Products Disabled By Administration
Products are moderated by Scribblers. If we consider a product unsuitable we shall disable it, and you will see it in this section.

I’ve been looking round the gallery over the last couple of days. I have grabbed a couple of screen shots for you to see. These images show the public side of the gallery. Another time I will post some images of the admin side where the calligraphers maintain their gallery.

The first image shows how the gallery homepage looks. As new pictures or products are first uploaded they appear on the home page as thumbnail images. As more pictures appear eventually the older ones will drop off the bottom.

The second screenshot shows a product for sale (I made up all the details). Against each piece you can enter a category, description, price and stock. We envisage most pieces of work being originals, but by having stock value you can then sell limited edition prints for example. By categorising each piece of work it will help visitors to the site search for certain types of work i.e. poetry or sonnet etc.
You will also be able to list which countries you are willing to ship to along with the shipping cost.

I now have my new username and password for the gallery – It’s like when you move being given the keys to the new house!
I have just had a quick look around the gallery site. I am going to take a couple of screen shots so you can see what its going to look like. I will also start posting more information about the gallery.

The Waiting Game

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

When I was younger, it seemed to take forever to reach Christmas or my Birthday – I hated waiting. Nowadays I find it just as hard waiting for ‘big’ news. What I mean by ‘big news in this case is the gallery. The idea I originally had nearly 2 years ago is almost ready.
We nearly launched a version early last year, but realised that we could improve it. So my web developer Rikki, and I, sat down and started planning it all over again.
I knew we were close when we met up in early January to sort out another list of questions and thoughts.
Yesterday morning I checked my emails, and saw a message had been sent by Rikki at 02:35 GMT (why do programmers work so late?) to say he had a couple of tweaks to do in the next day or two and would then email me a username and password for the completed system . Rikki also promised me screen shots and a video I can put on this blog so you can see a demo of the gallery :-)
